This Vanguard airline timetable is a folded double side small schedule. The
photos may look like it's a peach color, but it's really a light orange color
with black type.

Vanguard covered a mix of cities in the midwest and on the east coach using
Chicago/Midway and Kansas City as hubs for a total of ten cities served during
their eight years of service. Vanguard leased 737 and MD-80 aircraft.

This is one of the few remaining international airline timetables I have. I sold most of them and made some good money of them.

Qantas flew the pacific to North America, Zimbabwe in Africa, the South Pacific and via Asia to Europe and the Middle East.

The inside cover had a lot of info regarding how to use their timetable and the codes you would see listed. Their timetable not only included service between their own cities, but to/from cities they did not servce but could offer connections to using other carriers.

Qantas included in the timetable a list of flights by flight number, and the usual listing by cities. Most of their international flights did not operate daily or altered between nonstop on some days and with stops on other days. Aircraft used were in the 747/767 family of models even on domestic flights. That was a lot of seats to fill.
All airlines had to reduce their schedules and published revised schedules. This was a small dozen page timetable.

Western was serving the USA/Canada/Mexico/Great Britian with a DC10 Los Angeles-Denver-London/Gatwick flight and a Honolulu-Anchorage-London/Gatwich flight which was to be discontinued October 7, 1981 so doesn't show on the route map.

As noted in the timetable Western had Red flights which were $50 Travel Pass flights. When you flew a Red flight you were given a Travel Pass. Every time you flew a Red flight you received a validation, after five validations the pass was full and you could use it for $50 off any Western ticket to any destination. You could redeen up to 10 travel passes for a total of $500.00 off a ticket.

Some sample one way coach fares:

As shown on the lower right, TWA was celebrating 30 years of service in 1955.

TWA was annoucing new Sky-Tourist flights and a one way coast-to-coast cost of $80.00 each way with a roundtrip purchase.

While flying coast-to-coast, most of their routes at this time were in the upper midwest to the upper east coast. International flights across the Atlantic were to major European cities, North Africa, the Middle East, to India and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka).

This era of timetable were in the 'railroad' style which was hard to see flight between two cities, so major cities were sectioned out for easy reference.

New Sky-Tourist routes were marked with all other flights being all single first class service.

Aircraft flown during this period were:

Super G Constellation
Super Constellation
Constellation
Martin Skyliner
DC-4 Skymaster
Super Convair
DC-3

Symbols were used on each route so you knew which type aircraft you would be on. International and Domestic flights were also marked so you knew which flights had Berths available.

TWA also had through plane service with Delta and Braniff to the south and into Texas. Also domestic and internationl cargo flights were offered.

There is even an ad for Gruen Watches which as stated was the official watch of Trans World Airlines.

The back cover has a stamp showing that this timetable came from the Palmer House city ticket office in Chicago which was open 9:30am-6:00pm Mon thru Fri.

Some sample fares are:

Los Angeles/San Francisco - New York
First Class one way $158.85 ($1360.00 in 2012 dollars)
on top of the $158.85 a lower berth was $70.00 and upper berth $35.00

Boston - Chicago
It's what was formed after the original went belly up.

While the original flew to Europe, Asia, South America, BN2 started up in 21 cities serving 22 airports (IAD/DCA) and based itself in it's old home town of Dallas.

Later I'll post timetables from Braniff 3.

As you see they didn't have many flights as only two columns were needed for travel out of it's DFW hub, so you can just times by two to see there were not very large. Except for a DCA-IAD-DFW route, all other flights were to/from DFW.

BN2 joined up with United in Mileage Plus mileage program and teamed up with Emerald Air and Air Spirit to seven small cities via DFW.
Sunworld was based in Las Vegas.

This timetable was a tri-fold two sided cardstock type schedule and did not include a route map.

Service was to:
Las Vegas
Oakland
Oklahoma City
Ontario
Portland
Reno
San Diego
San Jose
Seattle
Spokane
Tucson

Non Reno/Las Vegas service was between San Jose and Ontario, San Diego and Tucson, Portland and Seattle.

As the cover mentioned, they offered free Las Vegas stop overs when flying through to other Sunworld destinations.

They also had a frequent flyer program called 'Fun One', but you had to call or ask in person about it.

The cover has a notation that schedules between Honolulu and interior domestic cities is subject to CAB aproval. This is the era when airlines needed to get authority to fly a route and for the fares that were charged. The timetable even lists which cities United can not take local traffic between, which includes Hilo and Honolulu, Chicago and Kansas City, Denver and Kansas City, and San Francisco and San Jose, CA.

A nice route map showing some of their main routes and a special nonstop transcon service map.

United used eight types of aircraft as shown on the reference page. Caravelle, 737,727, Super 727, 720, DC8, Super DC8, and DC8-Freighter.

The flight schedule is in the old 'railroad' style of listing the full flight by number and the cities/times that flight number covered. Flights were grouped by geographical areas and directions. Their Hawaii schedules notes that food service is not available on economy coach, interesting how all these years later, the airlines are back to not serving food.

The back of the timetable lists the locations of all their ticket offices and phone numbers. There is also a page explaining the type of fares they offered.

Also listed is something that would not fly today, and that is what they list as an 'extra fare'. What's an extra cost, United's Men Only 'Executive" flights between Chicago and New York or Newark have an extra fare of $3.00 plus tax for special services.

Yes that is correct they had a 'Men's Only' service called the New York Executive service which says Men Only. There was a flight leaving Chicago at 5pm arriving in Neward at 755pm on a Caravelle. The flight did not operate on Saturdays. Now what exactly where those female Stewardesses doing to those men only flyers that cost an extra $3.00?

Some sample one way fares are:
Los Angeles - New York
First class - $163.00 (in 2012 dollars that would be $1019.00)
Coach - $145.00 (in 2012 dollars $906.00)

Los Angeles - San Francisco
First - $28.45 (in 2012 dollars $178.00)
Economy Comuter fare - $13.50 (in 2012 dollars $84.00)

Chicago - New York/Newark
First - $56.00 (in 2012 dollars $350.00)
Coach - $45.00 (in 2012 dollars $281.00)
and remember that Men's Only flight was $3.00 more or in 2012 dollars $19.00
Short and quick sums it up as it wasn't around very long. They flew Bae-146 jets between Los Angeles/Burbank/Ontario to both Reno and Las Vegas.

The timetable is actually a two sided cardboard schedule with not much into on it. It does have their phone number and the scripted writing on the front says service between Los Angeles and Vail/Eagle Colorado starts December 13.

Their main service was between Las Vegas and Burbank/Los Angeles which many other airlines operated so not sure what they could have offered that the other airlines didn't.
Other then a route map, jetBlue gave very little info about themselves in this timetable.

All service was point to point in/out of New Yorks/JFK airport and a couple Washington/Dulles-Ft Lauderdale flights. They only had a few throught flights between the north east and Florida, everything else was considered connecting flights. I counted about 54 flights in/out of JFK with some of those flights starting later in February and some in March.

AirCal based in California had their main base at Orange County/John Wayne airport and flew within California. They would later expand outside the state and at the end of their life was purchased by American Airlines who did not continue their route system.

For this timeable they were flying to 15 cities in Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, and California. And was the official airline of the famous Universal Studio's Tour.

They airline was flying 737's and added MD-80 type aircraft which they shows in the timeable which flights operated with D98 aircraft.

They were already partnering with American Airlines and this timetable did highlight some connecting fligths with AA.

The timetable was in alphabetical order and did show the to/from flights for each market.

While the front and back covers are different, when open they show the front cover graphics are on the back along with their route map.

More AirCal/Air California timetable will follow.

The route map is a combined map for Pacific Express and WestAir, but the only WestAir service shown in the timetable is between Chico and San Francisco, and Fresno and San Jose.

Pacific Express lasted a couple of years and would go on to have a marketing agreement with PanAm.

Some sample fares from the timetable are:

Los Angeles-San Francisco $77.00 oneway ($177.00 in 2012 dollars)

Oakland-Portland $117.00 o/w ($269.00 in 2012 dollars)

Palm Springs-Boise $151.00 o/w ($348.00 in 2012 dollars)

As you see Pacific Express offered continental breakfast to all passengers on flights before 9am.

The map of their locations at Los Angeles and San Francisco airports is interesting and shows the history of the airline business as most airlines listed are no longer around.
Interesting how they put seasons on the cover and a actual date on the inside.

The front and back covers look almost alike, but when open and looked at together show part of the work logo.

A nice double page map in the middle of the timetable showing their routes which covered the globe.

Aircraft they flew in this timetable were 727,707, and 747's. Pan Am during this area only flew international routes with very little domestic US connecting flights. But they did fly a lot of point to point routes within Europe and even a a big domestic German operation with a hub in Berlin.

Besides an alphabetical listing of routes, Pan Am during this era was one of a few airlines that also listed a schedule in the back by flight number showing full routing per flight number and elapsed time for each flight.

Also showing in the timetable are cargo flights Pan Am flew. Some of the cargo cities were not flown as regular passenger service.

While not this exact timetable, but this one was one of the first timetables I ever say. While on an auto trip we stopped at a Howard Johnsons to eat. I saw this wall of brochures like hotels usually have and there was this whole section of airline timetables. I took one of each to look at in the car, what else is there for a kid to do in the back seat.

I open the Western timetable and saw that big jet photo and was hooked from that second.

In my younger days after getting a drivers license, I would go around and check out hotels/motels looking for airline timetables. There were times when I would just go to one of the local airports just to collect timetables. The only problem that I didn't know then, was when I picked up a new one, I would throw away the old one. Didn't know in the future they would become collectable and could be sold or traded.

So years later I was able to buy this one timetable to bring back the memory of seeing the one I had for the first time.

Western Airlines started in 1925 as Western Express and was one of the oldest airlines before merging with Delta Airlines in December 1986.

Western flew at this time in the Western USA/Canada/Mexico/Hawaii/Alaska and was headquarted in Los Angeles.

The equipment Western used as shown in this timetable was 707, 720, 720B, 727, 737 and L188 Electras. The Electras were used on their Alaska service between Anchorage and King Salmon, Homer, Kenai, Kodiak and Kodiak to/from Seattle. This flights were shown with an -A- after the flight number. Western was even flying between Anchorage and Honolulu.

During this era Western had their flights listed in alphabetical order and would show the return schedule next to the outbound as show in the photo.

I like the ad showing how they had more leg room in coach then a 747 had.

Western offered First and Coach fares, but also Military and Youth standby fares.

Some sample fares are:
Los Angeles-Las Vegas
First class $32.00 one way ($189.00 in 2012 dollars)
Military standby $13.00 o/w ($77.00 in 2012 dollars)
Youth standby $17.00 - so how many kids standby to go to Vegas......haha

Los Angeles-Honolulu
First class $165.00 o/w ($976.00 in 2012 dollars)
Economy Monday-Thursday $90.00 o/w ($532.00 in 2012 dollars)

Honolulu-Minneapolis/St Paul
First class $283.00 o/w ($1673.00 in 2012 dollars)
Military standby $102.00 o/w ($603.00 in 2012 dollars)

They never really did well after the Air Florida crash into the Potomac River in Washington, D.C.

This is a twenty page timetable introducing new service to London (Gatwick), Chicago (O'Hare), and Ireland (Shannon). Air Florida flew DC10's for long haul service. In Europe they flew to Amsterdam and Brussels plus the new London and Shannon service. They also flew to the Caribbean and Central America.

They served a number of cities in their home state of Florida and a few larger U.S. cities. Not sure if Toledo counted as a large city, but they did fly a Toledo-Tampa nonstop that continued on to Orlando and Miami.

Their route map also showed cities they flew charters to like Prestwick and Manchester in the U.K., Frankfurt Germany, and Zurich.

They also shows proposed cities of Boston, Santiago, Chile, and Dusseldorf, Germany.

During their year in service they flew DC10's, DC9's, 737's, 727's, 707's and Lockheed Electra's.
This is one packed 20 page timetable.

As you see by the cover, they were announcing the Boeing Intercontinental 707-320B was joining their fleet. Page two also lists their other aircraft including Boeing 720B fan jets, Douglas DC8's, DC7's, DC6B's and Electra prop jets.

Due to the distance to Asia, all flights went via Anchorage and flights originated in Seattle, Chicago, and New Yorks Idlewild airport (now JFK).

The inside front cover has some great double page graphics of their new 707 and information about the aircraft.

While this was the era of 'railroad' style schedules, Northwest also had some quick reference domestic schedules in the front for popular cities pairs listing flight info, aircraft type, and the type of onboard service.

Some sample fares are New York-Seattle oneway in First class $186.90 or $1401.00 in 2012 dollars. Night coach between Chicago-Milwaukee $8.85 oneway or $66.00 in 2012 dollars.
Wanted to go from New York to Manila roundtrip in coach $1120.00 or are you ready....that's $8396.00 in 2012 dollars.

Overall a nice timetable for the era.
It did fly to a few west coast cities and would grow domesticly and into Latin America in years to come.

This timetable has a pink, purple, and blue outer color style naming various cities it flew to. This timetable must have been a local Los Angeles cover as the back gave a list of ticket offices in the greater L.A. area.

The timetable listed which flights were 'Whisperliner' flights operated by L1011 widebody jets, and even had a separate schedule towards the back with just whiperliner flights.

Also included towards the front was the famous Eastern Air-Shuttle service showing their hourly flight times between Boston-New York/LaGuardia and Washington/National-New York/LaGuardia. Also shown was shuttle fares of $28.00 oneway Boston-NY and $30.00 oneway Washington-NY. That would be in 2012 dollars (rounded) $130 and $140.

There is even an ad and membership form to join Eastern's Ionosphere private club. They listed lounges at Atlanta, Chicago, Miami, Newark, New York (JFK and LaGuardia), San Juan, and Washington/National. Annual membership cost was $25.00 or a life time membership for $200.00. Or in 2012 dollars $116 and $931.
Frontier's last published timetable was dated September 3, 1986. It never went into effect because the airline halted operations and filed bankruptcy the week before.

Frontier flew to many large and small (really small) cities from the west coast to the midwest.

People Express bought Frontier in October 1985 and ran it as a separate division unil August 1986 when Frontier ceased operations.

The front of this 31 page timeable had very colorful art work with a Las Vegas theme. The inside cover had a double page vacatioin destination ad for Phoenix and Las Vegas.

The back cover showed a typical midwest looking flight attendant with a country style apron serving a meal tray. Frontier was using a motto of 'First class legroom at coach prices'. They had single class service with more leg room and served first class meals on jet service. It also says on most lunch and dinner flights meals feature a complimentary personal size bottle of imported Mateus wine with each meal.
The timetable does not have a route map or must info for passengers. It did show symbols showing which flights had a meal service or snack service, and which flights had a Happy Hour two for one cocktails. It did point out that some flights were operated by indepentent contractors airlines and by
RW-Hughes Air West.

They didn't even say what the flight numbers in bold type meant.airlinefanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03233503131369348789noreply@blogger.com29tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2119585625373092718.post-29408048126249433772012-04-21T09:00:00.000-07:002012-04-21T09:00:22.510-07:00National Airlines June 13, 1978This is the old National Airlines and not the 'new' National Airlines that started years after the old one was taken over by PanAm.

The original National operated from 1934 to 1980 when it was purchase by PanAm.

This timetable included National international service to London-Heathrow, Paris-Orly, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt. National flew DC-10's on these routes from Miami and also had nonstop service between Tampa-Amsterdam which continued on to Frankfurt and a New Orleans-Amsterdam-Frankfurt route. MIA-LHR operated daily, but the other routes were operated on various days.

While National timetables were in alphbetical order by city, the timetables of this era also included what was called railroad schedules as shown in the fourth photo. There charts showed flights top to bottom as they operated by flight number so you go see the arrival/departure times of all the cities a flight number operated.

National was a well liked airline and people were sad to see it disappear and become part of PanAm.

Hughes Airwest as in Howard Hughes, purchased Airwest in 1970 which was a mix of other airlines going back to 1941. The airline was mostly flying in the western part of the USA with service into Canada and Mexico. The airline was sold to Republic Airlines in 1980. Republic was also an airline made up of other airlines and was itself purchased by Northwest in 1986, which is not owned by Delta.
TWA was purchased by American Airlines in 2001 prior to 9/11.

TWA would later give up it's Asia service which included Guam, Okinawa, Taipei, Bangkok and Hong Kong. They would continue to operate to Bombay even while I was working for them.

The timetable shows which flights were operated by 747's and L1011's and includes fares in all their markets. One way New York - Los Angeles was USD243.00 (USD1131.00 in todays dollars) in First Class and New York - London was USD578.00 (USD2689.00 in todays dollars) oneway in First Class.

TWA also had cargo only aircraft across the Atlantic, Pacific, and within the USA.

This was an era when widebody aircraft, mainly the L10's were flying to such cities as Dayton, Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Kansas City. Today you are lucky to see mainline jets in cities that used to have widebody aircraft.
